A linear equation is formed when you want to know where two linear functions y 1 = a x + b and y 2 = c x + d have the same outcome, so where: a x + b = c x + d .
Equations like these can be solved using the balance method.
Alternatively you can plot the graphs of both formulas in your graphic calculator. At the point of intersection the outcome of both functions is the same.

When you need to solve an inequality such as y 1 < y 2 , you need to solve the corresponding equation y 1 = y 2 first.
Then you use the graphs of y 1 and y 2 to read off the solution to the inequations.
